A must see documentary for all! We have to stay informed about the food we eat and this is an excellent way to do that. This informative film reveals surprising, and shocking truths about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here. Food Inc. features interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield Farms' Gary Hirschberg and Polyface Farms' Joe Salatin.

An excellent film that kept us interested all the way through, except I feel too much time was spent on the woman who lost a child and we fast forwarded through some of that. I am sorry for her loss but it just dragged on too long. My skeptical husband since bought the DVD and has been passing it around to friends, who now want me to raise all their chicken and pork for them :-D

Unlike PETA films this one does not try to gross you out and make you a vegetarian. There are a few short graphic scenes but rather than try to sicken you, the message they are trying to get across is how a handful of Big Ag companies control over 80% of America's food supply, and how politically powerful and nearly untouchable these companies are. It all seems very bleak, but at the end you are told how you can get better control of your own food supply... for example raise whatever you can, buy direct from the farmer at the farm or at farmers' markets, at the very least eat simpler and make as much as possible from scratch and fresh foods rather than buying prepackaged, highly processed foods.

One point I would like to make about the chickens is that they are not "forced" to grow unnaturally fast as some reviewers say... they have been BRED to grow that way. I grow the same chickens, Cornish Cross broilers, in my "back yard" (we have 10 acres). Mine spend the first three weeks in the brooder til they are feathered out, and in addition to meat bird starter get hand pulled clover and grass with dirt and roots, as well as all the fine hay bits leftover from feeding other animals. After moving to pasture pens I cut their high-powered Meat Grower feed with 25% plain scratch because in my first batch, before I cut the feed, I did have a few keel over from congestive heart failure from too-rapid growth. They also get moved to fresh grass 2-3x daily. No problems with the next two batches -- I ordered 75 chicks and was shipped 79 (a good hatchery always includes a few extras) in those batches and had only 3 die, and those within the first few days, weak ones/shipping stress. I butchered from 6 to 8 weeks of age and while I did not weigh them, visually they were almost all larger than the storebought birds which are usually 3-1/2 to 4 lbs. In fact some were Godzilla chickens, about 8-10 lbs!

I love meat and will never be vegetarian unless I am forced to it. Some people will take this movie as a call to vegetarianism. I see it as a reason to buy your food direct from the farmer who grows it, one who allows you to visit the farm personally and see how it is raised. "Organic" simply means the animal was fed organically-grown feed. The animals can still be raised in terrible conditions and their meat labelled "Organic". "Cage Free" and "Free Range" does not mean the birds are happily running around a pasture... it can mean there are still hundreds or thousands crowded at a square foot per bird into buildings, with all their food,water and shade inside so even if there is one small door to the "free range" outside they are likely not going to use it.

I want to know how my meat was raised and how it died and was processed. I am lucky in that I can raise and home butcher my own pork and chicken and buy my beef from a friend who raises her animals the same way I do. Many cities are allowing folks within the city limits to keep chickens, so anyone can now keep their own for eggs or meat. My own town has no regs against livestock at all and I know a man in the middle of town who raised a pig in his back yard last year. He does have a large lot and kept the pen scrupulously clean so the neighbors would not have any complaints about smell. Laying hens and meat birds make a lot less noise than your average dog. Just don't keep any roosters to avoid annoying the neighbors (with meat birds sex doesn't matter, they are butchered long before they begin crowing).

I teared up during the slaughter house parts and had to even look away sometimes, but if you eat meat and you didn’t kill the animal yourself, I really hope that you watch this. This video gives you an “in your face” look into how meat ends up in our supermarkets and restaurants - and it’s far from humane, both in the exploitation of animals and people who are hired to harvest and kill them them for slaughter under big corporation and political influence. We don’t need to eat meat everyday to live, or even at all. Think about it, the majority of the corn and soy crops that are harvested goes to force feeding these animals of which humans then eat, when those crops could help sustainably help feed the world instead. Meat consumption is also a huge part of the cycle of destruction that our planet is going down. We’re killing our ecosystem (animals, forests for more animals to be harvested, slaughter sludge and manure entering our fresh water systems), we’re killing the only planet that we and our future generations have to live (global warming, diseases stemmed from animals), and we’re killing ourselves (obesity, heart disease, diabetes) because of our ingrained need to eat meat as part of our regular diets. It’s a lose - lose - lose all around. Animals suffer, our planet suffers and humans suffer. I’ve been “less meat” not necessarily “meatless” for the larger part of a decade now, only eating meat sparingly on special occasions, and am about to complete my first Veganuary challenge. It’s sustainable and it has opened a new food palette for me which I find even more delicious for some dishes than eating meat. Imagine if the McDonalds brothers made burgers from tofu, black beans or chickpeas “a thing” back in the 60s (which they probably didn’t know about back then yet) - how this world could have been a little different today. Thank you for making this very important video on a topic that literally is the beginning of a process that people who eat meat are a part of, of which the end result is human consumption and the consequences that we bear from it each time we vote with our dollar to perpetuate this horrifying animal slaughter system. I always wondered why meat was so cheap to buy at the store, and now that I see how it ends up there, I don’t think ending those animals’ life in such a horrific way was worth the price of whatever it was selling for, human gratification. I hope our future generations watch this video and other similar eye-opener documentary videos for years to come, to help them make more educated decisions after they’ve learned exactly how their meat ended up on their plate.

Constater ce que certains Industriels font afin d'augmenter leurs gains et cela, au mépris de toute la planète, terres, humains, animaux etc... serait à démontrer chaque jour, au journal télévisé pour une prise de conscience indispensable pour la vie de DEMAIN! Assez, de reportages sur tous les privilégiés de la PLANETE..... c'est répétitif et fatigant, parlons de l'HUMAIN et de ce que tous les LOBBIES, font de son DROIT DU SOL!....

No he podido ver el documental. Resulta que es NTSC y mi reproductor no es compatible, como es natural en un reproductor de España. No he podido verlo ni siquiera en el ordenador con programas supuestamente válidos para NTSC.
¿Qué hacen vendiendo en amazon.es un producto NTSC y encima sin especificarlo claramente?

Nie war meine Schockierung über ein scheinbar belangloses Thema größer, als nach dieser Dokumentation. Man möchte annehmen, Lebensmittelkonzerne sind bemüht um die Sicherheit und Gesundheit ihrer Konsumenten. Es ginge ihnen um die Produktion qualitativ hochwertiger Nahrungsmittel, Nachhaltigkeit und das Wohl aller - sollte man denken. Doch die Wahrheit sieht komplett anders aus, wie diese Dokumentation zeigt. Und nicht zuletzt aufgrund zahlreicher Aussagen und Interviews von Betroffenen, Beteiligten und ehemaligen Konzernmitarbeitern ist an der Richtigkeit dieser Informationen wohl kaum zu zweifeln.

Egal ob Fleisch, Getreide oder Gemüse - alles ist von den Verhaltensweisen der Konzerne betroffen. Das fängt bereits bei der Fleischproduktion an: Wo es in den USA der 1940er Jahre noch hunderte bis tausende Schlachthöfe gab, so gibt es heute nur mehr weniger als 100 davon, die allesamt in Händen von ein paar wenigen Konzernen sind, die den Fleischmarkt fest in Händen haben. Durch intensive Lobbyarbeit und Kontakte zu den Höchsten der Regierung ist es diesen ein Leichtes, die Gesetze, Regelungen und Vorschriften zu ihren Gunsten ausgestalten zu lassen, um damit rücksichtslos gegen Kontrahenten wie Konsumenten-, Tier- oder Umweltschützer vorzugehen. Von den Bauern, die durch eben diese Vorschriften immer weiter in die Verschuldung und somit in die Abhängigkeit von den Konzernen getrieben werden, möchte ich gar nicht reden. Ebenso wenig von den Schlachttieren, die unter den schlechtesten und tierunwürdigsten Bedingungen gehalten werden - seien es Rinder, Schweine oder Hühner.

Den Tieren wird nicht-artgerechtes Futter verabreicht, das in den Körpern Bakterien bildet, die ohne Kontrolle ins Fleisch mit verarbeitet und den Konsumenten wortwörtlich zum Fraß vorgesetzt wird. Daran sind bereits Menschen gestorben, u.a. Kinder, was in dieser Doku ausführlich geschildert wird. Trotzdem haben die Lebensmittelkontrollen in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten in den USA deutlich abgenommen, die Lebensmittel- und Konsumentenschutzbehörden stehen unter nicht unbedeutendem Einfluss der Konzerne. Hühner werden bis zum Geht-nicht-mehr gemästet, sodass sie kaum noch gehen können und auf engstem Raum in ihrem eigenen Dreck leben müssen. Tageslicht und Auslauf wird ihnen unter dem Vorwand verwehrt, dies könnte sich unhygienisch auf das Fleisch auswirken - dass die Tiere in Dreck leben wird wohl als außerordentlich "hygienisch" angesehen. Fragt sich nur, wieso es dann nötig ist, die geschlachteten Tiere in Chlorwasser zu tauchen, was nebenbei ebenfalls im Fleisch enthalten bleibt.

Eine der größten Ungeheuerlichkeiten ist die Tatsache, dass Grundnahrungsmittel in den USA von Konzernen patentierbar sind. So "gehört" beispielsweise das Saatgut von Mais und Sojabohne einer einzigen Firma, die damit tun und lassen kann was sie möchte, was gentechnische Veränderung angeht. Durch Knebelverträge werden Bauern daran gehindert, jemals wieder eigenes Saatgut zu benutzen, geschweige denn, die Saat aus der letzten Ernte wieder einzusetzen. Dazu werden Spritzmittel mit Gentechnik-Saat als "Gesamtpaket" verkauft, um die Pflanze gegen das giftigste Gift resistent zu machen. Dass der Boden und das Leben darin dadurch vollständig und irreversibel zerstört werden, scheint die Konzerne dabei wenig zu kümmern. Auch dass die Unkräuter mit der Zeit gegen alles resistent werden und damit durch nichts mehr zu bewältigen sind, leuchtet vielleicht vielen ein, doch es wird insbesondere von denjenigen, die etwas dagegen tun könnten, standhaft ignoriert. Durch diese profitorientierten Eingriffe in die Natur sind bereits 25 Millionen Hektar (= 250.000 Quadrat-km) in den USA nicht mehr zu bewirtschaften, da die Unkräuter gegen alles immun sind. Das entspricht etwa der dreifachen Fläche Österreichs, die man komplett mit der Hand bearbeiten müsste, um sie wieder bepflanzbar zu machen.

Bauern, die auf die natürliche Methode setzen, sei es bei Pflanzen oder Tieren, werden von den großen Konzernen als Feinde betrachtet und rücksichtslos durch Klagen beseitigt. Sie haben allesamt keinerlei Hilfe zu erwarten, da die Entscheidungsträger dieser Fälle oftmals ehemalige Konzernmitarbeiter sind. Zu alldem kommt erschwerend hinzu, dass es vielerorts keinerlei Kennzeichnungspflichten gibt, was Zutaten, Gentechnik oder Herkunft des/der Produkte(s) angeht. So ist es den Konzernen ein leichtes, den Konsumenten glückliche Kühe auf der Wiese vorzugaukeln, die in Wirklichkeit in Massentierhaltung ihr Leben fristen müssen und dabei Mais bekommen, obwohl sie Grasfresser sind. Oder hochwertiges Getreide, "sorgfältig ausgewählt", das in Wirklichkeit auf toten Böden wächst und von Anfang bis Ende mit chemischen Mitteln bespritzt wird.

Wer öffentlich seine Meinung sagt (wie Oprah Winfrey in den 80ern oder 90ern), muss schon mal mit einem jahrelangen Rechtsstreit wegen "Verleumdung", "geschäftschädigenden Behauptungen" oder "unwahren Aussagen" rechnen - weil an den Hebeln der Macht immer noch jene sitzen, die an Konzernen entweder beteiligt sind, Mitarbeiter waren oder davon profitieren. Das Prinzip lautet: Nicht der Konzern muss nachweisen, dass seine Produkte NICHT schädlich sind - sondern wer auch immer muss nachweisen, DASS sie schädlich sind. So lange dürfen Produkte weiterhin verkauft werden. Dieses Rechtssystem stinkt zum Himmel und mag vielleicht rechtens sein, doch ist es in höchstem Maße illegitim!

"Food Inc." - Was essen wir wirklich? Die Antwort darauf verdirbt womöglich vielen den Appetit, doch gerade in Zeiten von Verhandlungen über ein sogenanntes "transatlantisches Freihandelsabkommen" (TTIP) ist es für ausnahmslos alle Bürger vonnöten, die Antwort zu kennen. Und sich gegen rücksichtslose Geschäftspraktiken zur Wehr zu setzen.

FAZIT: Für absolut jeden empfehlenswert, der die Wahrheit aushält. Vor allem aber an diejenigen, die bisher keine klare Meinung dazu hatten: sehen Sie sich diese Dokumentation an und entscheiden Sie dann!
