Before buying, I recommend you check their company webpages and use their respective memory configuration applications verify the memory you selected is indeed the correct one for your machine, it is worth the effort, since Amazon doesn't have a cross reference to ensure what they have listed/described is or isn't what you need -- been down that road once, part number off by one letter but still described in listing as compatible when Kingston said it wasn't; Kingston was accurate, Amazon description wasn't. Sure, Amazon made returning for correct item easy, but still...the couple extra minutes double checking would have saved me the time and trouble.
Just received a new Lenovo ThinkPad T550 that came with 8GB of RAM. When I installed a new m.2 SSD, I noticed that it was a single memory stick with the second slot free. After a little research, I discovered this Kingston 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3L (L stands for low voltage - 1.35 vs. 1.5 standard voltage).
I received it, removed the battery, unscrewed the 8 screws that hold the back plate in, then used a spudger to separate the back plate from the laptop (the only tricky part there is around the battery, but if you separate the rest of the back plate you can lift and push the back plate toward the battery and it should come off pretty easily - be careful not to force too much around there since that's the smallest pieces of plastic on the back cover). Installing the memory module was as simple as pushing it in at an angle and seating it firmly. It's easy to know when you have it in enough based on the existing memory module (in my case, I could see a little bit of the brass connector tops).
When I powered up the laptop, it immediately recognized the 16GB RAM, and runs as if it was upgraded from the factory.
Note: The T550 has an internal battery, and the service manual suggests going into BIOS and turning that off before working on it. I didn't do that, and don't think it's necessary for memory or M.2 type of slot plugins. Just make sure you properly shut down your laptop and that it's OFF before beginning the work.
I matched the specs to this item and added it into the spare 2nd slot and rebooted. Nothing more.
BIOS immediately detected it and worked just fine. This was s 2nd shipment.
I had to return the original order due to it failing and being dead on arrival.
The first shipment failed in either slot, both with and without the factory OEM memory. The PC would turn on, but would produce only a black screen and never get to the BIOS / Thinkpad message.
I suspect the original delivery was damaged in the delivery process due to the poor protection (jiffy bag).
